    Communist and Nationalist forces in China conflicted with each other during the Chinese Civil War. This has no direct impact on United States troops, as we were not involved, but it did foreshadow the overpower of the Communist parties around the world, which did lead to American interest in fighting.

    From 1945- 1980, the Soviet Union and United States engaged in a politically correct "cold war"; no fighting occured on either side (save for the Korean War), and both sides fought for their beliefs. Americans worked to provide West Berlin and continued trying to promote democracy. However, this was more of tension based on disagreement of policy.

    The Iron Curtain(dubbed by Prime Minister Winston Churchill)referred to the part of the country already influenced under Communist rule, but endured the power of the movement. It was ironic,because toward the west, citizens were gravetating toward democracy and the United States. This an example of the good American foreign policies demonstrated across seas, and prefaced a standard held for years by American involvement.

    It is at this point in time that Harry Truman announces that "America's primary foreign policy doctrine will be one of
    containing radical ideologies." The Truman Doctrine assisted countries such as Romania in providing food and provisions regarless of social status and race, in order to set an example in attempt to defer the country of Communist ideals. This lead to the deepening of conflict between Soviet Union and American citizens, and ultimately became a precursor to the Cold War.

    Berlin Blockade/Airlift (1948-1949)-Slide 6By this time, Allied troops had taken over West Berlin, however East Berlin was very vulnerable yet. However, Stalin, the Soviet leader, blocades highways and roads into West Berlin, cutting off any and all supply access. It is his hope to barter West Berlin from the Allies in order to reinforce Communism throughout the country. However, President Truman was not going to allow that to happen, and instead implemented the Berlin Airlift, designed to drop provisions to those in the west without.

    United NationsThe United Nations was created as international alliance, and to put into effect after WWII. Following the Korean War (1953), the Armistice Agreement was created to enstill peace and commemorate loss and bloodshed. Still in accord today, the U.N. delgates and maintains to keep powers stable. Very crucial to American alliance.

    NATO: North Atlantic Trade Organization; Initiated as a mutual defense mechanism, and implemented to prevent WWIII. It includes the Western part of the Atlantic, i.e. United States and Canada, and ensured that any country threatened by Communist power would have the defense of these strong forces against the Soviets.

Troops (mostly U.S. soldiers) to fight against North Korea. They retreated, but then hundreds of thousands of Chinese citizens "volunteered" to help them. This was the first stalemate in American military history, and resulted in a terrible amount of losses in lives.

    Arms RaceThe Cold War sparked an incredible amount of advancement in military technology, such as the U2 jet plane, used as a secret fighter plane until it's identity was compromised when the USSR shot one down. Regardless, this is an early example of United States victory behind the line, and our involvement with weaponry.

Essentially, Europe divided into armed camps. This brought to light the mistrust between the Soviets and Americans, effecting us on the homefront, and eventually became rooted much deeper in the Arms Race and general international agreement. The Iron Curtain created a harsh political divide.

    Space RaceSpanning from 1955- 1972, the Space Race was in full swing as the Soviets pulled ahead, sending the first dog, woman, and three man-ed space shuttle into space. But the largest victory came in America, with the success of safely landing Neil Armstrong on the moon.

    This was the Soviet's way of physically cutting off West Berlin from the rest of the country. John F. Kennedy was president of the United States at this point, and was widely admired by the citezens of West Berlin. His "Let them Come to Berlin" speech is one of his most memorable, and he used his persona as encouragement to Westerners to not be discouraged by the of the communists.

    End of the Cold WarThe literal fall of the Berlin Wall, Iron Curtain, and Communist threat over Europe symbolized the end of the Cold War. American political parties accredited themselves with the victory; for example: the Republicans claimed to have executed supreme military tactics over the course of the Reagan-Bush years, while the Democrats argued that communism was sustained due to efforts made by President Truman.
