    Period of Paranoid anti-communism in the USA following WWII which was fuelled by McCarthy. McCarthyism was the intense paranoia that communists where everywhere. It rooted out many communists, but was more like a witch hunt than anything ells. It was led by Senator Joseph McCarthy.

    Truman’s Plan to help Greece and Turkey to stop communist takeovers there.

    The CIA was founded. It was a major part of Counter Intelligence against the USSR. It still exists today.

    Plan to economically help Europe in order to stop communism

    An attempt by the USSR to starve West Berlin into joining them. The USA and GB Used the Berline Airlift to boat in supply’s until the USSR pulled out.

    The Korean War

    Korean War
    On June 25, 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea. The UN sent forces to help, commanded by the US government. President Truman appointed Gen. Douglas MacArthur as the Commander of the forces in South Korea. The fighting continued along what is called the 38 Parallel. The war ended on July 27, 1953, with a truce agreement.

    Sputnik I Was launched. It was a major Soviet achievement. It was the first man-made satellite. It had the USSR in the lead of the space race.

  • U2 Crisis

    USSR shot down a USA U2 Spy plane. USA had to admit it was spying on the USSR.
  • The Bay of Pigs

    The Bay of PigsThe Bay of Pigs invasion was a planned attempt by the USA to kill over through Castro by sending trained Cuban's to attack the Bay of Pigs and spark a rebellion. The attack was botched, and failed. It also made Castro mad. It ended with people held in Cuban prison, which the US had to trade supply’s to free.

    Cuban Missle Chrisis

    JFKLBRYThe Cuban Missile Crisis, also known as the Thirteen Days, was the closest the Cold War ever got to becoming a Nuclear war. American spy planes found nuclear arms in Cuba. America said that any nuclear missile launches from Cuba would be an act of war by the USSR. The US demanded immediate removal of the misses, and set up a naval blockade. The USSR's ships refused to turn around until just before they reached the blockade. Because of the Crisis, a Phone between the US and the USSR was set up.

    U.S. Ship claims to have been fired upon. In order to "preserve peace" the U.S. authorizes military action against Vietnamese. On July 28, 1965, it is officially announced that the U.S. will be mobilizing in Vietnam.

  • Tet Offensive

    The Tet Offensive was a series of surprise attacks by the Vietcong on the forces of South Vietnam, and the U.S. stationed in the Capital. It took place on the first day of the lunar new-year, a very important Vietnamese holiday.
    Although militantly it was a defeat for the Vietcong, it was a physiological and political win. <a href"http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h1862.html"> u-s-history.com </a>

    Vietnamization

    This was a policy adopted by Nixon that said we would start pulling out troops from South Vietnam. In return we would train them to be a self-sustained government. This effort, along with all of the war effort, came undone in 1975 when the communist party took full control of Vietnam once again.

  • Man on the Moon (Apollo 11)

    NASA
    The Apollo 11 was launched. It successfully put the first man on the moon, sending the USA into the lead in the space race
  • Kent State Shooting

    Students at Kent State, a collage in Ohio, are protesting the Vietnam War. The Ohio National Guard is called to the seen to keep the peace and disperse the rally. The guardsmen shot rounds, most away from the crowd, but some into it. A total of Nine students were wounded in the shooting.
