Dred Scott was an African American slave trying to escape from his owner. He went to court to argue that he should be free since, he has lived in free states. Dred Scott won the case but, the Supreme Court changed the decision.

South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. Within a few months of Abraham Lincoln's election, South Carolina seceded from the Union.

Abraham Lincoln received a message from Fort Sumter because they needed more supplies. Lincoln sent an unarmed group with supplies. Jefferson Davis told his Confederate Troops to attack before the supplies could arrive. The Fort surrendered.

The Emancipation Proclamation was a presidential proclamation. It gave freedom to the slaves in the Confederate states if they didn't have to go back to the Union. Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

General Robert E. Lee brought 25,000 soldiers to Gettysburg and the Union got pushed. The Union regrouped with 80,000 soldiers. Eventually it was a Northern Victory. The North lost 23,000 men and the South lost 25,000.

General William T. Sherman led 60,000 soldiers from Atlanta to Georgia. The meaning of this March was to scare Georgia into abandoning the Confederate cause and to stay with the Union.

This battle was one of the last battles of the Civil War. General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate Army. There was a meeting at the McLean home where General Lee agreed to surrender.
