David has a horrid dream that Sophie's sixth toe is revealed and she is put to death as a deviation.

Uncle Axel stumbles upon his young nephew, David, talking to his cousin Rosalind. Only problem is, Rosalind is not there with him. David explains to uncle Axel the gift he shares with other children (telepathy) and Axel tells David to keep his gift a secret.

The Fringes people invade Waknuk for supplies. During the invasion two men are captured; one who looks suspiciously like Joseph Strorm but with abnormally long arms and legs.

Alan Ervin finds out about Sophie's sixth toe but definitely does not keep it a secret... . Because the Wenders are no longer safe they decide to leave Waknuk.

Uncle Axel tells David about what is beyond the Bandlands. Axel explains there is civilizations everywhere; not just Waknuk. There's culture, and religion different from David's wildest dreams but because of Waknuk's strict society no one knows anything other than what they've been taught.

Emily Strorm's sister Harriet has just given birth to a mutant child. Harriet begs her sister to let her borrow Emily's also newborn baby, Petra, who appears normal. Emily turns her sister away and Harriet is later found dead in the river.

The rest of the telepathic kids are introduced: Michael, Sally, Katherine, Mark, Anne, and Rachel, (along with David and Rosalind)

Petra falls in the river and sends a distress signal so intense it hurts the minds of the other telepaths, especially David and Rosalind. David and Rosalind quickly run to save Petra

Anne turns against the telepaths in hopes of pleasing her future husband Alan Ervin. She ignores the advice of her friends, who tell her to stay away from Alan because it will threaten their gifts.

six months after Alan and Anne's marriage, Alan is found dead with an arrow in his neck. Uncle Axel later confesses to David that he killed Alan. In the meantime, Anne is driven to hang herself and leaves a note exposing the chrysalids.

Petra's horse is attacked by a giant cat and she reaches out to all the other telepaths to save her. Jerome Skinner sees the chrysalids together and is suspicious

Katherine and Sally are tortured until they confess to being part of the chrysalids and expose David, Rosalind, and Petra.

Rosalind, David, and Petra escape Waknuk on great horses before they're captured. Troops are sent to return the three back to waknuk immediately and Rosalind kills a man who attacks them.

David, Rosalind, and Petra are attacked in the Fringes. Here they meet Gordon, (the long armed prisoner who escaped Waknuk) and find Sophie to be alive. Gordon is interested in Rosalind and keeps her along with Petra in hopes to reproduce. With the help of Sophie, David rescues his love, Rosalind, and his little sister.

Petra's telepathic abilities are so strong, she communicates with a woman from New Zealand, known as Sealand. In Sealand, telepathy is embraced. Petra asks the help of her new friend to save the chrysalids.

The Sealand people fly across the world to rescue the group from the Fringes. Although, Michael stays behind so he and Rachel and make the journey together. As Rosalind, Petra, and David reach Sealand, David realizes the city is the same as the one of his dreams.
