    The popualtion continued to rise, taking a toll on Chinas food supply. by the time it came to the mid 1950's the government started to change their tune and decided to provide the country with contraceptives, developing voluntary birth control programs, and supporting abortion.

    Mao attempted to rapidly convert China into a modern industrialized state only made matters worse. With a huge amount of workers moving from farming to factory work there was even less food than before. China was in trouble and unless this changed things were only going to get worse.

    The Government release Propeganda to try to discourage couples having a large amount of children. they used the slogan "Late, Long and Few" to promote it.

    Things do slowly get better. poeple were not starving but almost every item was in shortage items such as soap, cloth, eggs and sugar all had to be rationed.

    As people were only allowed one child many wanted a boy. they wanted a boy to pass on the family name and because of the Chinease tradition that once you get married the couple live with the boys family and care for them when they get old. Because of this there are now 120 boys for every 100 girls.
