The empire lasted from 802 CE through till 1431 CE. The thought to be first ruler was a man called Jayavarman ll ruled for 33 years. The capital of the Khmer empire was Ankgor which at its largest scientists believe was one of the largest cities in the world. In current Cambodia the ancient temples are a popular tourist destination.
