Abraham Lincoln, was elected President of the United States. Abraham was also an abolitionist, which meant that he was against slavery. Lincoln was running against Stephen Douglas, who was a democrat. Once Abraham Lincoln became president changes started happening quickly. -

Jefferson Davis Confederate President The Confederate States of America made Jefferson Davis their president. He used to to be part of the United States government, but the Confederates offered him more than what he was getting now. he was elcted in for a six year term. He remained presidnt until May 5, 1865. -

The battle at Fort Sumter was the very first battle of the Civil War. The Confederates started the war by firing at the Union in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Major Anderson was the general for the Union. At Fort Sumter the Union only had little supplies. The general for the Confederates was General Beauregard. The Confederates won the battle after the Union surrendered the fort. -

The first battle of Bull Run happened twenty five miles southwest of Washington along a stream called Bull Run. The general for the Union was General McClellan. The general for the Confederates was General Thomas Jackson. The Union pushed the Confederates back, but then they came back and won. Any hopes to a quick war were gone. -

The Union Army was focusing on winning control of the Mississippi River. Ulysses S. Grant was the Union's general who led them into Tennessee. The Confederate general was General Johnston. 40,00 Confederate soldiers attacked the Union, but during the night more Union soldiers showed up and counter-attacked the Confederates and ended up winning. -

The Union was going down the Mississippi capturing all the cities. New Orleanns was one of the biggest cities down there. The Union naval officer David Faragut captured New Orleans. the Confederate general was General Lovell. After the Union captured New Orleans they headed up the Mississippi capturing port cities. -

Lincoln sent Union troops back to Virginia. The Union's general was General George B. McClellan. The Confederate's general was General Robert E. Lee. Lee used to be part of the U.S. Army to join the Confederates. The Confederates suffered many deaths, but was still able to force McClellan back helping them win this battle. -

In this battle the generals were General John Pope for the Union and General Robert Lee for the Confederates. Lincoln forced General Pope to advance to Richmond. General Lee caught the Union's army offguard and Pope's army fell, giving the Confederates another victory. The Confederates won both battles at Bull Run. -

The Batle of Antietam was one of the bloodiest single-day battles of the war. The Confederates wanted to win a victory on Union soil, Lee and his army began crossing into Maryland. The two armies met along Antietam Creek. The generals during this battle were General McClellan for the Union and General Lee for the Confederates. The Union won this battle. Lee lost about a third of his troops. -

This proclamation was proclaimed by Abraham Lincoln. It said that all slaves were to be freed on January 1, 1863. By setting the slaves free over 180,000 African Americans were able to serve in the Union army during the war. -

The "habeas corpus" was the protection against unlawfully being taken to prison. During the Civil War Abraham Lincoln suspended it, so if someone seemed suspicious they could arrest them until proven innocent. Many antiwar activists were arreseted after the "habeas corpus" was suspended. -

Vicksburg, Mississippi was the only city standing in the way of Union control of the Mississippi River. General Grant was the Union's general during this battle. The general for the Confederate's was General Pemberton. General Grant began a siege and the Confederates surrenedered on July 4, 1863 -

The Confederates pushed the Union back, but the next day the Union pushed a major Confederate assault back. The general for the Union was General Meade and The Confederate general was General Lee. Lee ordered Pickett to attack the Union, most of the 150,00 men involved in Pickett's charge were killed. Lee's retreat from Gettysburg and the capture of Vicksburg caused the northern's faith to be renewed. -

The Gettysburg Address was something that Abraham Lincoln wrote last minute on a train to Gettysburg. This address dedicated the battlefield that the Union fought on. It also spoke of how brave all those men who lost their lives for their nation were. -

While in Appomattox Courthouse the Confederates were surrounded by Union troops. Lee figured that the situation was hopeless and surrendered to Grant on April 9, 1865 This officially marked the end of the Civil War. This was the most deadly battle in U.S. history. -
