After Lincoln's assasination Andrew Johnson, Lincoln's Vice President, becomes President. Johnson had three main goals for his presidency were to declare the ordinace of secession illegal, repudiate the Confederate debt, and ratify the Thirteenth Amendment to abolish slavery. congress disagreed with his ideas and took over in the reconstruction.

The Ku Klux Klan Acts made it illigal to prevent or interfer with anyones voteing rights. This law was put into place due to the large increase in violince and intemidation from groups like the KKK and the White League.
