The 8 most significant events in international relations between 1871 and 1914

  • The end of the Kulturkampf

The Kulturkampf was basically a political conflict between the Kingdom of Prussia (led by Otto von Bismarck) and the Roman Catholic Church (led by Pope Pius IX) about the introduction of the Institution of Marrage. Bismarck lost the debate this year because the Catholics founded the Centre Party, and it already represented a serious political force.
  • Triple Alliance

I think it was a pretty important event, as it was a military alliance agreement between the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, the Italian Kingdom and Germany.
  • Dreyfus Affair

The key word for this event is antisemitism. I think this event is important because it has essentially divided French society into two parts, and European Jewry has also wondered whether Europe is safe for them.
  • Battle of Adwa in Ethiopia

I think this is also an important event, as Italy wanted to increase the number of its colonized territories, but they did not expect that the Ethiopian forces defeat them because of the Russian and French weapon shipment.
  • Spanish-American War

It was also an important event, much of what happened as America 'intervened' in the Cuban War of Independence (just like in nowadays, but at the sight of the Russian submarines they changed their minds, anyway), causing Spain to lose its last major overseas colonies.
  • Second Boer War

Again an important event, essentially the British wanted more, so they issued an ultimatum to the Boers. They did not accept this, so the battle began. Unsurprisingly, the British, with their "unlimited" forces, won the battle.
  • Triple Entente

It was a treaty on the Anglo-French alliance, effectively ending the colonial differences between the two countries.
  • Third Balkan Crisis

It was basically a war for the division and possession of former Turkish estates, especially Macedonia and Thrace. Serbia and Greece, with Romania and the Ottoman Empire, turned against Bulgaria and they gained some of their territories gained in the first Balkan war.
