Around 20 Africans were carried to Jamestown, Virginia, and were traded for provisions. These slaves were taken from a Portuguese slave ship. They were not classified as slaves but Indentured Servants at the time. -
Bacon's Rebellion took place in Virginia and it was a culmination of poor white and black people fighting together because of the Government fastening it's transition to black slavery. -
The Pennsylvania Quakers was the first group of people against slavery in America and Britain but in the early days of America they were the most prominent slave traders. This group primarily consisted of members from the Society of Friends and they actively tried to help in the abolition movement by swaying America and Britain to go against slavery. -
George Washington ordered to his recruiting officers that that free blacks were allowed to fight in the American Army. More than 5,000 African Americans fought against the British. -
This slave act made it a crime to protect an escaped slave and interfere with an arrest of a slave, so an escaped slave was not free if they were caught. If anyone tried to hide and help the escaped slaves a $500 penalty would be set on them or they would have to endure harsh punishment. -
The African Methodist Episcopal Church was organized and Richard Allen was it's first Bishop. -
Nat Turner led the most brutal slave rebellion in United States history. He led the 75 enlisted slaves and killed 60 whites but suffered the casualties of about 200 slaves. He was convinced to do this because of an eclipse of the sun and "divine voices" saying that it was his time to rise up. -
In this case the United States ruled that African Americans were not citizens of the united states and they denied the ability for congress to prohibit slavery. -
The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry led an attack on Fort Wagner in South Carolina. This Infantry was the first all black regiment in the North for the Union Army. Around 185,000 African American soldiers fought on the side of the Union. -
The 13th Amendment is where slavery was finally abolished after a long fought Civil War of the North vs the South. The 13th Amendment states, "Neither slavery or involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction" (Section 1 of the 13th Amendment).
