    This slave act made it a crime to protect an escaped slave and interfere with an arrest of a slave, so an escaped slave was not free if they were caught. If anyone tried to hide and help the escaped slaves a $500 penalty would be set on them or they would have to endure harsh punishment.

    Nat Turner's Brutal Slave Rebellion

    Nat Turner led the most brutal slave rebellion in United States history. He led the 75 enlisted slaves and killed 60 whites but suffered the casualties of about 200 slaves. He was convinced to do this because of an eclipse of the sun and "divine voices" saying that it was his time to rise up.

    In this case the United States ruled that African Americans were not citizens of the united states and they denied the ability for congress to prohibit slavery.

    First All-Black Regiment in the Union Army

    The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry led an attack on Fort Wagner in South Carolina. This Infantry was the first all black regiment in the North for the Union Army. Around 185,000 African American soldiers fought on the side of the Union.
  • Ratification of the 13th Amendment

    Ratification of the 13th Amendment

    The 13th Amendment is where slavery was finally abolished after a long fought Civil War of the North vs the South. The 13th Amendment states, "Neither slavery or involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction" (Section 1 of the 13th Amendment).
