In the 1800's the government put a tax on everything imported from Europe. During this time period the south was trading the cotton they produced to England, so they made manufactured goods that the south needed.

On the day of April, 11 1861 Commander Beauregard went to Fort Sumter to try to aide the people there before him to demand the surrender. This descussion went on till 4:00 in the morning of the tweleth when the first mortar fired signaling open fire for the confederates.
