Telling Time Throughout the Ages

  • Using Sunrise/Sunset to Tell Time

    One of the oldest ways to tell time was to look at the sun. They could tell when the day was beginning and when it was coming to an end.
  • Hourglasses used on ships 12th Century

    Hour glasses with sand were used on ships and helped to determine longitude and used as time keepers.
  • Obelisk 3000 BCE

    About 3,000 BCE Egyptians used an obelisk which is a vertical structure with four sides. It was used as a shadow clock.
  • Water Clocks

    After sun dials, water clocks were used to tell time. They used the flow of water to measure time. Horizontal lines were drawn on the bowl that the water woulddrip into. THey would use this as a means to show pasage of time.
  • Hour Glass- 11th Century

    This was the first tool used that did not rely on the sun. It was created in the 11th century in Europe.
  • Mechanical Clocks

    Mechanical Clocks were used in 1300 CE in Europe. Weights and balances were used to mark out invrements over a 12-hour time span. Eventially, a pendulum was added.
  • Wacthes 1400's

    The first watches were used in Italy. They measured time through a coiled spring device. These clocks are still used today but more often than not, these watches contain quartz crystal.
