Technology Use Over My Teaching Career

    In the begining.....
For my first teaching job, technology was an inconvenience. In order to use computers, I had to take my classes to the adjacent library building computer lab (which was shared with the entire school). Needless to say, computer use was incorporated only sparingly. When I did have my students use computers, it was to look at a web site and answer questions.

    Becoming more comfortable....
After being at my first teaching job for two years, I relocated and left teaching for a year. When I returned in 2015, I began to use technology more frequently. The school I was now at had 3 computer labs and a couple iPad carts. I began to incorporate research projects and group projects using PowerPoint. I also used Microsoft Publisher for students to create brochures. I used PowerPoint in my classroom as well for notes and students would fill in skeleton notes.

    Increasing use...
This was a turning point. Having access to technology provided me the opportunity to use technology as a way of incorporating more hands-on learning opportunities. I was able to get my classes using computers on approximately a weekly basis. I saw student interest and engagement with what we were learning about. I began to create WebQuests for various topics. I continued with group research projects and presentations. I also continue to use PowerPoint in my classroom for various topics.

    the Google era....
This marks the beginning of my school becoming a "Google School." I now have Classroom pages for each class. I communicate tests dates, reminders, class notes, and links. All of the projects completed are now paperless and turned in via Classroom. It is extremely helpful when students are absent and they can simply check Google Classroom to get caught up. I made the switch from Microsoft products to Google Docs, Slides, etc. which made group collaboration and providing feedback much easier.

    the New Age...
Students use school Google accounts to communicate with me. My school still not being 1:1 does create a challenge. The school has added 3 Chromebook carts and 2 laptop carts. Most students have technology at their fingertips at all times. While this can become a distraction, it does permit students to access Google Classroom, look up grades, etc. I continue to use technology to encourage active investigation and research and like to incorporate choice in technology mode when possible.
  • Moving Forward....

    Moving Forward....
After spending a semester studying technology and it's incorporation into instruction, I am anticipating moving forward. I have learned the importance of thoughtful reflection regarding how/when I use technology and questions to ask myself when planning for instruction/activities involving it. I understand that it is not simply something to use to simply use it. Rather, technology should be incorporated with clear intentionality, reasoning, and purpose to promote learning.
