  • The First Adding Machine

    The First Adding Machine
The first successful attempt at a machine or device used to quickly add and subtract numbers was performed by Blaise Pascal. Pascal was a nineteen year old when he first invented it, and he did so to help his father with his work, seeing as how he was a clerk and spent his days tirelessly adding numbers for clients. Prior attempts at creating a devicee much like this one, which wa used by turning 6 dials, were only recently discovered in the 1950s. Read the second page for more information.

    The First Adding Machine #2
The first known attempt at an adding machine was done by Leonardo da Vinci, and the second was in 1623 by Wilheim Schickard. This invention had a profound impact on society. It made acountants' and clerks' lives a lot easier, but it also began a trail of inovation for mathmatics, ultimately leading to the 100 dollar calculators of today. This meant that more people, not just mathmatical geniousess, could learn how to do math.

  • The Pocket Watch #2

    The Pocket Watch #2
The pocket watch was a big improvement in the lives of normal human beings being run by sceduels, This was one of the first time-keeping devices. Without this, we may never have had an accurate source for the time, other than the sun.
  • The Pocket Watch

    The Pocket Watch
Christain Huygens's, a wide-interested scientist, contributions to the science of horology lead to major improvements in the reliablity of the pocket watch. When he proposed the idea of using a coiled spring based regulator, his idea resulted pocket watches being able to keep time withing 5-10 minutes a day. This meant that people would be able to be more on time for things, and, in general, simply keep time. This made a lot of improvements for daily life in general in society. Read on for more.
  • The Piano

    The Piano
Invented by Bartalomeo Cristofori, the piano was one of the world's greatest musical inovations. Cristofori lived from 1655-1737 and was known as an Italian instrument maker. He is often considered the inventor of the modern piano. It was invented just after the Renaissance, when the world was bursting with artistic exploration.

    The Piano #2
Although it was invented many centuries ago, the piano continues, to this day, to be among the most prestigues and often used instruments. It's notes and method of use are common among almost all instuments (excluding strings and percussion), making it easy to play and relatively easy to learn. Most compositions include some form of piano accompaniment, causing it to be sorely missed if it hadn't been invented.
  • Carbonated Water and Soda Water

    Carbonated Water and Soda Water
When Priestly invited his friends to drink his new found invention, it was the beginning of a trend. People everywhere took to drinking this, and today it is considered, around the world, to be a classic. It is shared among friends and, ultimately, took the place of alcholic beverages, because until that point that was the only common drink available. Without soda and carbonated water, who knowns what we would be drinking. We could still have only beer, wine, whiskey, tea, and coffee.
  • Carbonated Water and Soda Water

    Carbonated Water and Soda Water
Joseph Pristly was titled many things and has over 150 published works. Generally credited with the discovery of oxygen (having isolated it in its gaseous state), he discovered carbonated water or "soda water" in 1767. It happened when he first discovered a method of infusing water with carbon dioxide when he suspended a bowl of water above a beer vat at the local brewery in leeds, England. The air blanketing ht fermenting beer ("fixed air") was known to kill mice suspended in it.
  • The First Toy Balloon

Michael Faraday, through his initial experiments with various gasess, discovered the toy balloon. Initially made of rubber, he was the first person to think of the concept. Used in modern day for celebrations, it is common place to find various balloons in supermarkets and general stores. Without the balloon, we wouldn't have such a way to say Happy Birthday, Get Well Soon, or Congradulations. We may have been stuck with cards and without balloons. They are also used to give to little kids.
  • Neon Lights

Georges Claude, a French engineer and inventor, presented neon tube lighting in essentially its modern form at the Paris Motor Show from December 3–18, 1910. Claude, sometimes called "the Edison of France", had a near monopoly on the new technology, which became very popular for signage and displays in the period 1920-1940. Neon lighting was an important cultural phenomenon in the United States in that era; it was the beginning of advertising.
  • Neon Lights

Creating many new and fantastic sights in the early twentieth century, neon lights created new ways to get peoples' attention. It shows, from distance, whether a buisness is open or closed. It shows where well known busnesses like McDonald's and hotels. Without them, we wouldn't be able to quickly locate places without much difficulty.
  • The Lie Detector

This invention was an inovation to many different ways of life. It improved police work by allowing them to have a way to prove whether a suspect is lying about his guilt or not. It improved government work and even some forms of personal work so that they have a scientific way of knowing if someone is lying or not. So without it, we wouldn't have a scientific way of knowing.
  • The Lie Detector

The polygraph was invented in 1921 by John Augustus Larson, a medical student at the University of California at Berkeley and a police officer of the Berkeley Police Department in Berkeley, California. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, the polygraph was on its 2003 list of greatest inventions, described by the company as inventions that "have had profound effects on human life for better or worse." Most people would think of police work and crime when thinking about the effects.
  • Virtual Keyboard

A virtual keyboard is a software component that allows a user to enter characters. A virtual keyboard can usually be operated with multiple input devices, which may include a touchscreen, an actual Computer keyboard and a computer mouse. No matter the type, however, they have made it possible to have tablets and smart phones.
  • Hybrid Car

The Toyota hybrid car is an alternative to the cars most people drive, consuming less gas yet being more expensive originally. Because of the trend towards being greener and more for the environment, this caused people to want to buy these cars.
