"Syria: The Story Of the Conflict"- BBC (Foreign)

  • The Riots

    The Riots
In March of 2011, protests began to arise. Security officers opened fire onto the protestors which caused an outbreak of riots by July. They were then demanding that Assad step down as president.
The beginning of these smaller riots marked the beginning of what will soon later become a terrible refugee crisis that affects the entire world.
  • The Civil War

    The Civil War
Syria ented a Civil War as the riots began. The rebels were fighting the government forces trying to take over control of cities, hoping that their actions would drive out Assad. As of now 250,000 people have died due to the conflict.
This war is important because it has begun to drag in many outsiders such as the Kurds, Russia, IS, and more.
  • Refugees Flee

    Refugees Flee
In 2013 the refugees that began to flee soared. Over 11 million Syrians have left the country, which is about half of the countries initial population. There are still 12.2 million that need help in Syria.
This is important because the UN is trying to launch appeals that provide help for the refugees, but are currently failing at their goal of providing 18 million Syrians.
  • The Chemical Bombs

    The Chemical Bombs
Syria's government began using gas filled rockets on people in districts near Damascus. Hundreds of people were killed due to their actions.
This is important because Assad was at risk for facing US intervention. As a result, he agreed to remove and destroy chemical weaapons. Even though they were destructed, there is still use of chemical use in the war.
  • Islamic State Gets Involved

    Islamic State Gets Involved
The Islamic State began taking over the territories that are in chaos in the region. This creates a war within a war, while Syria is in a civil war, they are also fighting against ISIS, and so is the Kurds.
ISIS has now moved on to creating war with the world. In 2014 the us led an air strike in Syria, killing innocents and terrorists, hoping to destroy IS. Their terrorist acts have now freightened the world and caused more trouble in Syria.
