Stevie and her best friend from high school joined the local California band, Fritz, in 1968. The group opened for acts such as Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix.

The band, Fleetwood Mac, was in search for new members after their lead guitarist Bob Welch. The band asked Lindsey Buckingham (Nick's now lover) to join the band, but he refused to collaborate unless Stevie was part of the deal. Fleetwood agreed, and in 1975 Stevie and Buckingham signed on to Fleetwood Mac.

Fleetwood Mac recorded a new album that went straight to No. 1 and sold 3 million copies. Nicks' tracks, like "Rhiannon" and "Landslide" were hits. She became an overnight sensation.

Fleetwood Mac's next album, Rumours, spent 31 weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart, went platinum in both the United States and the U.K., and earned the group a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1978.

Stevie's first solo album, Bella Donna, reached No.1 on the Billboard chart and featured the hit singles "Edge of Seventeen" and "Leather and Lace".

The singer started developing serious problems with alcohol and drugs. She maintained a severe cocaine habit that eventually created a hole in her nasal cartilage. Stevie also became strongly addicted to tranquilizers. During this time, she continued to tour and turn out independent records as well as albums with Fleetwood Mac.
