Today I interviewed for a job at Fisher Middle School in Greenville SC. I assume that since I have 3 years of STEM experience under my belt, STEAM could not be that different. Especially since I am a humanities teacher.

Fisher Staff meet for the first time to discuss the upcoming school year and establish what will happen and what to look forward to in the upcoming school year. I unfortunately was far too pregnant to attend this meeting!
-
I gave birth to my little girl at 9:23am. This made traveling to SC for about 2 weeks impossible and put me on maternity leave until September 15th! Obviously I was unable to attend the opening of the school and all of the excitement that came along with that.
-
I came back to school and was briefed by my team about our Olympics PBL. We met a few times and began to plan for implementation. I also had a dose of reality that this environment was very different from the school I had moved from. In North Carolina we had 500 students total between two magnet programs. There was only one team per grade level and 90-100 students per grade level. Not having true teams has proven to be difficult in terms of doing multi-disciplinary PBL’s.
-
This was the first STEAM Alive meeting I was able to attend. This proved to be overwhelming for me and truthfully a little frustrating. I felt as if I had nothing to contribute and felt very behind in the whole process.
-
This was another community meeting about the STEAM Alive piece. I was becoming more comfortable with the school environment and with the classes I taught. This made it easier for me to think about other things like implementing a whole group PBL and how my content would fit into the Olympics project.
-
During our mini presentations to the panel that came to visit, I felt as if I did not pull my weight in the whole STEAM Alive piece. While I had talked with the team and with Ben (SS) particularly about how I could aid in the implementation of our unit, I felt like I had nothing set in stone or on paper for that matter.
-
On the day of our final presentations I had actually taken some extra time to sit down and plan out what I would do to enhance the teaching of Ancient Greece and the Olympic games. I have been able to produce a PBL that encourages sportsmanship and connects to the animal intelligence unit that we are working in.
-
Today I reflect on my overall experience and realize that while I missed those first planning sessions and meetings, I was able to help create a well-rounded PBL that enhances the students overall knowledge and life skillset. Looking ahead to next year I hope to improve our time management so that we all can be on the Olympic unit at the same time. I also hope to “iron out” some minor details about the project to make it work more efficiently. This process has made me appreciate my team more and
