A command economy is a system which the government made all the economic decisions. Political leaders identify the country's economic needs and also determine how to fulfill them.

The government began seizing over twenty-five million farms. It combined these farms into large, government owned farms. These farms were called collective farms. Families worked on these farms producing food for the state.

Stalin built a police state to maintain his power. He had the police men monitor telephone lines. He also had them arrest family members. These police officers arrested and executed millions of so-called traitors.

The great Purge was a campaign of terror directed at elimnating anyone who threatened his power. Those who helped stage the revolution were either executed or sent to camp. The labor camps were created for "crimes against the Soviet State."

After the Great Purge ended, Stalin gained complete control of the Communist Party and of the Soviet government. Stalin, at this point, was responsible for 8 to 13 million deaths.

Between a number of five to ten million peasants died working on the farm. This was a direct result of Stalin's agricultural revolution. These peasants were called collectives who worked on the collective farms.
