It impacted special education because Section 504 of this act protects children and adults with disabilities from exclusion, and unequal treatments in schools, jobs, and the community.

    This act required public schools to provide appropriate educational services for all children with disabilities between the ages of 3-21. This act opened the door for IDEA, which provided funds to states with special education.

    Board of Education of the Hendrick Hudson Central School District v. Rowley

    This court case ruled that a deaf student named Amy Rowley was provided with an appropriate education which included an individualized program, that allowed her to perform at or above the level of her non-disabled peers. This court case set a model for school districts to follow the necessary level of benefits a student must be provided in regard to special education.

    Individuals with Disabilities Act

    This law required schools that received funds to provide a free appropriate public education for every child between the ages 3-21, regardless of disabilities. It replaced the PL 42-142. This made it possible for all children with disabilities to receive a free, appropriate public education and open the door for states to develop intervention programs for infants with known disabilities.

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act

    This law reauthorized IDEA. The language changed because it influenced African American students as having learning disabilities, which led to higher dropout rates in African American students. Another change was to align more with NCLB, and it also established performance goals for students with disabilities. This law required schools to report performance on standardized testing for students with disabilities.

    This law ensured the rights of individuals with disabilities to nondiscriminatory treatment in other aspects of their lives, specifically protection of civil rights in areas of employment, transportation, public accommodations, state and local government, and telecommunications. This law ensured that students with disabilities rights were protected even outside of school.

    This law was to improve the academic performance of all students, including those with disabilities. This allowed not only non-disabled students to receive a quality education, but also those student with disabilities.
  • Endrew F. vs.Douglas County School District

    Endrew F. vs.Douglas County School District

    A student named Endrew pled that his I.E.P offered him only some developmental progress, and the court agreed and favored his case. This case shed light that the courts didn't define an "appropriate" education and set a new model for the level of benefit a child should receive from an I.E.P.
