    Three U.S. diplomats to the Secretary of State, William L. Marcy tried to advocate the seizure of Cuba. Trying to get Cuba was apart of the expansionist drive in the Caribbean in 1850. Pierre Soulé, U.S. minister to Spain, was the one who failed to his mission to secure the purchase of Spain.

    When Cubans started to rebel against Spain. American sympathies were the ones who came and helped Cuba. Although their rebel was unsuccessful. They did accomplish the abolishment of slavery.

    Weyler is sent to Cuba to try and restore order and try to see who the rebels are. He finds out by sending over 300,000 citizens to concentration camps. Over a thousand of people die from disease and starvation. They also figure out that the people are no longer able to aid the rebels and help them out.

    The New York Journal had published a private letter written by Enrique Dupuy De Lôme . Cuban rebels had stolen the letter and sent it to the United States press. Inside the letter was him criticizing the President, William McKinley. The Spanish government apologized and their minister resigned but America was still unhappy.

    Cuba's poet and journalist exile of New York purposely organizing a revolution in 1895 that would have Cuba citizens and rebels destorying American made sugar mills and plantations. He hoped this would provoke the U.S. Politicians were split, some wanted a free Cuba and others wanted their investments protected.

    George Dewey was the one who have command to the U.S. to fire on the Spanish fleet. Within hours the fleet had been destroyed. After the attack, Filipinos had also wanted free of Spain. A few more months and 11,000 Americans joined forces with Filipino rebels.

    Admiral William T. Samson had sealed the Spanish fleet in the harbor of Santiago de Cuba, near the coast. Thousands of American soldiers volunteered to fight. Admiral Samson was the one who would assist and destroy the fleet.
