  • Executive Order 8802

    Executive Order 8802
    ''opening jobs and job training programs in defense plants to all Americans “without discrimination because of race, creed, color, or national origin.” This was the year a million jobs were given. This was brought in order by Franklin Roosevelt.
  • Executive Order 9066

    Executive Order 9066
    On February 19, 1942, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. It authorized the Secretary of War to establish military zones on the West Coast and remove “any or all persons” from such zones. Officials told foreign-born Italians and Germans to move away from the coast, but within a few months they canceled those orders.
  • Bracero Program

    Bracero Program
    There were argricultural problems in Mexico, so an agreement between the U.S. and Mexico started the Bracero Program. It provided transportation, food, shelter and medical care for many braceros. Between 1942 and 1947, more than 200,000 braceros worked on American farms and sometimes other industries.
  • Establishment of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE)

    Establishment of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE)
    When CORE was founded there goal was to use nonviolent techniques to end racism. In May 1943, it organized its first sit-in at a restaurant called the Jack Spratt Coffee House. Groups of CORE members, including at least one African American, filled the restaurant's counters. They refused to leave until everyone was served. The sit-in technique ended discriminatory policies and quickly spread to CORE groups in other cities. These efforts paved the way for the civil rights.
  • Zoot Suit Riots

    Zoot Suit Riots
    Zoot Suits were worn by yound Mexican Americans. They wore long draped jackets, baggy oants with tight cuffs, and slicked-back hair. It offended most people, including sailors. Sailors usually roamed the streets, looking for Mexican Americans to beat up in Zoot Suits. In 1943, fighting turned inot riots in the streets. Police arrested victims rather than sailors and the army/navy officials restricted GI's access to Los Angeles while on leave.
