The invasion of the Muslims in Spain brought their form of slavery with them. Slavery itself has a long history in both Europe and Africa. Europeans first enslaved native islanders and after started to import Africans. The laws between Europe and Africa were different; "European law entitled the landowner to everything produced in the land, whereas African law entitled the slave owner to everything the slave produced"(11).

The English traders encountered an African leader in the city of Benin. John Hawkins a backed English investor attempted to break into the Portuguese slave trade by force. In Hawkins first voyage he seized a cargo 400 slaves, on his second voyage he went directly to the Guinea cost instead of working with local African rulers whom were willing to sell slaves, and on his third voyage he became as allies with the African king. The New Netherlans were hoping in making their colony profitable so turned to enslaved Africans. The colony had an estimated of 700 slaves by 1664. (45).

Although Slaves were Free some places like Illinois prohibited free slaves from entering the state. There was a penalty of 39 lashes and expulsion; however, slaveholders were allowed to rent slaves to work in Illinois.

It took approximately 83 years to overcome slavery.

The original date slavery ended was January 1, 1863, but it took 2 years to reach Texas in 1865.

After, the Hall v. Decuir in 1878 with the prohibition of racial segregation on public transportation the Supreme Court was invalidation of the Louisiana law. It was declared injustice in 1882, and in1883 the Fourteenth Amendment did not pertain discriminatory by private practice thus completed the retreat from Reconstruction.(478)
