  • 1787 Northwest Ordinance Article VI

    The Northwest Ordinance article led many people to believe this meant the founders wanted to get rid of slavery, since it banned slavery north and west of the Ohio River.
  • The Cotton Gin

    The cotton gin made seeding cotton much quicker and more profitable. This however led to slavery expanding very quickly because of the amount of money that could be made.
  • The Louisiana Purchase

    The Louisiana purchase was a purchase of land that at least doubled the amount of land in the US. Which immediately rose questions like if the land would be slave or free.
  • The Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise said that any land above the 36 30 would be free excluding Missouri.
  • Antislavery Liberty Party is Created

    The Liberty Party was created by antislavery activists as a real antislavery party. The antislavery liberty party demanded a stop to interstate slave trade and the end of slavery in the expansion west. Though the party got few votes.
  • "Wilmot Proviso"

    The "Wilmot Proviso" was submitted by David Wilmot which banned slavery in land won from Mexico. The Proviso got northern support and passed the house, but it did not pass the senate.
  • The Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo

    The treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo ended war between Mexico and the US. The treaty stated that Mexico sell New Mexico and California territories to the US for 15$ million dollars. Antislavery activists were not happy with this as the riches gained from the war would only help grow slavery.
  • The Free Soil Party

    The Free Soil party was made by leaders of the Liberty party who saw no representation of antislavery and made the Free Soil party to be more competitive against the Whigs and Democrats. They then joined the election in 1848.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850 kept the Missouri Compromise alive and tried to give something to everybody but in the end, it only rose tension between the two sides.
  • The Fugitive Slave Act

    The Fugitive Slave Act mainly gave permission to federal agents to recapture escaped slaves and gain help from the northern community to do so. This law trumped state and local laws which made northerners worried.
  • Harriet Stowe Published UNCLE TOM'S CABIN

    UNCLE TOM'S CABIN was a novel about antislavery that helped boost the antislavery cause and also began to make slavery a day-to-day topic.
  • The Case of Anthony Burns

    This case showed how the Fugitive Slave law outraged a lot of northerners. Burns had escaped from slavery in Virginia 1 year earlier was clubbed and taken to jail. Word of Burns spread and eventually a mob formed at the courthouse that demanded they release him. Things escalated as 2 days after Burns's arrest they stormed the courthouse and killed a Marshall.
  • The Civil War Begins

    The secession crisis starts with pro slavery states like Texas, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and more leaving the union. Rebels called the Confederate States of America then started firing on Fort Sumter. In days Abraham Lincoln called for 75,000 Northerners to fight the rebellion thus starting the civil war.
