    The Underground Railroad began 21 March 1787 and on during the underground railroad there were a lot of abolitionist. Like the most known one Harriet Tubman who guided over 200 slaves to freedom while looking for her family. Or Levi Coffin who housed and sent over 2000 slaves to freedom while feeding, clothing and watering them.

    But some did not help directly like Harriet Beecher Stowe, she helped by writing a book called Uncle Tom's Cabin this opened the eyes of many other abolitionists to start helping.

    Having an even amount of free and slave states congress argued whether Missouri should become a free or slave state. So not wanting any fighting Henry Clay came in and settled the Compromise. The south got Missouri and the north got Maine, creating an even balance between the slave and free states.

    On March 3, 1820 Missouri Compromise was created by Henry Clay, and passed by congress. This Compromise created a line called the 30’30’ that stretched above present day Oklahoma.     Levi Coffin
    Born on October 28, 1798 his family were quakers. During the time of the underground railroad he had a station in Newport Indiana. During this time he helped over 3000 slaves on their northern journey. So his station got the nickname Grand Central Station, and he was called the President of the Underground Railroad. The funds from his primary job also allowed him to gather large amounts of wealth which in turn, allowed him to supply clothing, food, and water.

    August 22-23, 1831 Nat Turner and 60 plus slaves lead a rebellion in Southampton Virginia, killing 60 plantation owners. They did this because they were fed up with how the plantation owners were treating them. But this didn't solve anything as a result/response over 200plus slaves were killed even after Nat was found and hanged. Also the south made laws making slaved have no human rights (They weren't allowed to vote, meet in groups of 5, or own any guns.).

    On January 29, 1850 the Compromise of 1850 is a document made up by Henry Clay, John C. Calhoun, Daniel Webster, and Stephen Douglas. This happened because California wanted to become a free state. In the Compromise the south got the Fugitive Slave Act. This was huge for the south, it said anyone in the north or south had to return any fugitive slave. But the north got two things California admitted as a free state also no one was allowed to trade slaves in the nation's capital Washington D.C.

    May, 30 1854 Stephen Douglas came up with the idea of the Kansas Nebraska Act. He got this idea so he could win the votes of the north and south. The act says the United States would disband the 36 30, so all the territories could decide by popular sovereignty whether or not they would become a slave or free state.

    The most infamous case in history, on March 6, 1857 the court ruling said that Dred Scott and any slave was not a human being, and that they are property. Therefore Dred Scott didn’t have the right to sue for his freedom. Also under the 5th amendment slave owners could bring their slaves anywhere, meaning the Missouri Compromise of 1820 was disbanded. After the case though Dred Scott was bought by one of his childhood friends Peter Blows and 9 months later he died.

    Bleeding Kansas
    Bleeding Kansas occurred on May 21 1856. On this date southern slave supporters looted and burned down two anti-slavery newspapers. In response to this John Brown organized the murder of five proslavery people. These two events also triggered widespread looting and murdering across the state. Also known as “Bleeding Kansas” this was a mini civil war. But not until 1861 did the killing slow down.

  • Raid on Harpers Ferry

    Raid on Harpers Ferry
    On October 16, 1859 John Brown and a group of at least 20 people black and white attacked Harpers Ferry. He did this because he though other slaves in the area would uprise and join him and when they did he would arm them with weapons. Insted what happened was townspeople in the area rallied and killed 7 people including 2 of his sons. When the army came led by Robert E. Lee they captured Brown and took him in to get a trial. When he got his trial he was sentenced to hanging, and on December 21

    They were mad because they felt if the north could win without a southern vote then whoever al the north voted for would win, and the south didn't want to be apart of that. December 20, 1860 the first southern state (South Carolina) seceded. Later the whole south would secede and even later after that the Civil War would start.
