    The Opening of Highway 404
    In 1977, Highway 404 was opened. This allowed further and faster urban development of the town. It allowed them to expand the land they were living on and making it easier to access these places by transportation.

    A Mayor is Elected

    A Mayor is Elected

    Creating the Fordson Tractor
    Around 1917, the war made many young people from the city of Markham leave to go and fight in Europe. As the people of the city had little help to maintain the crops, they developed farming machinery, like the grain combine (Fordson tractor) in order to thresh grain easily.

    The Standard Bank of Canada

    The Standard Bank of Canada
    In 1883, The Standard Bank of Canada branched out and located one of their banks in Markham (on Main Street). The old bank is now more commonly known as 'The Old Curiosity Tea Shop'. The bank/tea shop is important because it is a piece of Markham that hasn't been removed or taken down, just remodeled.

    The Opening of the Scarborough-Uxbridge Line

    The Opening of the Scarborough-Uxbridge Line
    On September 14, 1871, the Toronto and Nipissing Railway Company opened the Scarborough-Uxbridge Line. The railway brought renewed success and rapid development. The following years, the Village of Markham grew to a population of 1,100 because of the railway.

    The MacKenzie Rebellion

    The MacKenzie Rebellion
    In 1837, the people of Markham had heated tensions between reformers and the family compact. This led to the MacKenzie Rebellion, where the town was divided based on their opinions to get rid of York or not. William Lyon MacKenzie was the leader of the rebels, wanting to get rid of York. The rebellion soon died after little progress was made, aside from some farmers openly supporting the rebellion, who were arrested.

    Founding the Township of Markham

    Founding the Township of Markham
    Markham was founded by William Moll Berczy, a German artist and developer in 1792. He led a group of German families to North America to settle their families in a new place. Since he founded Markham, he supervised everything and even designed many of the commercial buildings in York.
