Democritus and his mentor, Leucippus thought that all mass was made of what they called "Atoms". They thought that the particles were what gave the mass certain properties. -

Aristotle
Aristotle didn't agree with Democritus so when he died, Aristotle and Socrates took the 4 elements idea and this was what a lot of people agreed with for just under 2000 years, -

Alchemists were the first group of people to actually start experimenting, they were considered part philosophers, mystic, magician and chemist. They believed elements could be mixed and morphed into other elements, they could create an elixir that would let them live forever and a solvent that dissolved all matter
