In 1747 the shakers were founded in England. They lived in male and female seperated rooms or houses. To them religion was their lifestyle and both male and females would meet or join to pray or work.

The first colony for the shakers was established in 1776, in Nikayunna which is close to Albany, NY. Celibacy and agarian communal living were in their governing principals.

Ann Lee died in 1784, she was greatly missed and was appreciated for her contribution the the Shaker Society

James Prescott arrived at North Union and he changes to Shakerism. He served as a historian, educator, and journalist for the community.

In 1840 Samuel Russel leads the North Union through one of it's greatest periods of time.

In 1850 the North Union had the most members yet. There were about 350 to 400 members in the North Union.

In 1854 the famous Tree of Life was drawn. It was a spiritual drawing from Hannah Cohoon.

In 1886 Charles Reader buys the Gristmill but doesn't intend to use it for normal things. Instead he blows it up and he does it on purpose. He sells the sandstone from the Gristmill.

In 1889 the North Union community of Shakers breaks apart. The shakers that were left moved to colonies that were in southern Ohio. Shaker artifacts were saved or preserved.

The shakers sold their land in 1892. They sold it to different people and groups until it was all gone. In all they sold 1,393 acres of land.

In 1960 the last shaker town was turned into a ghost town. Pittsfeild, Ma was the town and its people moved away.
