  • Shawnee State 9/11 Day of Service

I worked from 12:00pm-4:00pm to help make the school look better for Homecoming Weekend. During this time, I cleaned windows as well as put streamers up around the UC.
  • Salvation Army

This was my first day volunteering at the Salvation Army. I was nervous going in as I was not sure what to expect. I ended up organizing the books and the back room where most of the household and kitchen items were. They also had me pretend to be a shopper and follow a woman around that was suspected of stealing.
  • Arab Responses to the Arab Spring Uprisings

During this lecture, the speaker talked about Arab government, American government, as well as protests. I learned that there were many Arab leaders forced out of power and that protests (there were a lot of them) typically turned into armed contests.
  • Childrens Learning Center

I volunteered at the CLC for their Family Fun Night. For this, the families drove out to the Shawnee Forest and they had a bonfire, face painting, a walk in the woods, games and other activities. My job was to paint the kids faces. I did not do a really good job but I was able to put a smile on their faces!
  • Distinguished Lecture Series

The speaker of this lecture did two tour in Iraq. He talked about his personal experiences as well as other governmental and constitutional topics. I learned that he was an actor, directed movies, and even wrote books. The speaker talked about his friends and the emotions he had while he was doing his tours and the emotions he still has to this day. It was a really motivating lecture. He then gave up pennies at the end of the lecture that are made of steel instead of copper.
  • Salvation Army

My second time at the Salvation Army I got to organize clothes. I had to separate the coats from the jackets and put them on their own racks. I also got to put clothes on the floor and organize the ones that were out of place.
  • Salvation Army

This was my third time at the Salvation Army and there was not much for me to do. I had to help bag the items people bought as well as made sure the clothes were in the right places.
  • Salvation Army

I had to great opprotunity to clean shoes during my time volunteering on this day. It was not my favorite task to do here but it was needed.
  • Salvation Army

I got to pull tags for the second time. What this means is I went through certain racks and took the clothes off that were on sale the previous week. Once they are taken off, you put them in a big black trash bag and send them to the back room.
  • Salvation Army

I did a little bit of everything today. I started off by pulling tags and then changed over to cleaning shoes and ended by putting out clothes.
