Most of the bad things that John Wilson do are done in Canada, and the majority of the book takes place there as well. -

This one is important because it finally means that John has a source of income to help provide for Polly and their kids. It also gets him somewhat known by the public and makes him much less of a stranger to Canada. This one is pretty obvious as to why it is important, Polly was his first wife and instead of figuring things out between them, he took the way out that wouldn't solve anything. Killing Polly not only messed with John's head, but it also left their kids in Canada without a mom. -
John and Jessie get married
This event further proves how bad of a person John Wilson is, after this he had a track record of his wrongdoings in Scotland, abandoning his family, cheating on his wife, killing his wife, and then marrying the person he was cheating on her with.
