Gleaning- an act of taking someone's life is the only way that a Scythe can die. Scythe Faraday surprises all when he is gleaned. The story reveals that he gleaned himself.

Citra and Rowan are both assigned a new Scythe to work under. Citra is sent to the well respected Scythe Curie, while Rowan is sent to the rather wicked, Scythe Goddard. The two scythe apprentices are pitted together, the scythedom claiming that only one can live.

Citra does lots of research and finds that Scythe Faraday actually faked his own gleaning and is in fact still alive and in hiding. Once finding this out, Citra evokes the help of Scythe Curie in finding Scythe Faraday's whereabouts.

Rowan is beginning to see the major faults in Scythe Goddard's ways. He is troubled by many of the things he sees while under the apprenticeship of Goddard. During a mass gleaning, Rowan has the courage to glean Scythe Goddard when others are not looking, and burn the evidence, making it look as though the Scythe died by fire.

Citra wins Scythedom and is welcomed as an official new Scythe. Along with this win, Citra is expected to glean Rowan as part of the rules of her win. Citra devises a brilliant plan that allows her to remain a new official Scythe, and also save Rowan's life.
