  • scott v sanford

    The supreme court case where Dred Scott tried to sue his former slave owner saying that he was legally free (because he lived in a free territory). He lost his case and the supreme court ruled that african americans didn't have the right to sue in court, and that congress didn’t have the power to ban slavery because it was protected under the 5th amendments right to “property”
  • reconstruction and reconstruction amendments (1865-1877)

    The 13th, 14th, 15th, and 24th Amendments were part of the reconstruction efforts against discrimination. They were put in place to give the same rights to black people as were given to white people.
  • jim crow era

    this was the era where they had segregation in most places, it was also just know as the seperation from whites and blacks
  • plessy v ferguson

    the supreme court ruled that jim crow laws legal under the circumstances that "separate but equal" accommodations provided
  • 19th amendment

    this amendment was created to make it fair for all men and women to vote
  • scottsboro boys

    9 young black men were accused of rape they were given a sham trial, they were denied the right to a capable lawyer and the right to be represented by counsel.
  • George stinney case

    george stinney was the age 14 when he was wrongly accused of murdering two young girls and was executed, he did not get a good lawyer who didnt give him a fair trial and he was faced with a death penalty
  • brown v board

    this was the court case that went against plessy v ferguson and made jim crow laws illegal
  • civil rights act

    they banned segregation of race, color, religion, sex, etc
  • voting rights act

    this was made to give equal rights based on race was also made to help to go against restriction of black people voting
  • civil rights act

    defined housing discrimination and did not allow discrimination against race, color, religion, or sex this was also known as the fair housing act
  • california v bakke & gratz v bollinger

  • meredith v jefferson co board

    Students from Jefferson County Public Schools were given a chance to pick which schools they could go to. However, some schools wouldn't accept for applicants. Some of these factors were, place of residence, school capacity and race. Schools had to have at least 15% of black students enrolled, but no more than 50%. Meredith, as well other parents, sued the district and claiming that these policies violated the 14th amendment equal protection rights under the law.
