    William Symington successfully produces the world's first steamboat using a steam-driven paddle wheel. The steam boat pulls two 70 ton barges on the Forth and Clyde Canal.

    The first railway in Scotland opens up between Monklands and Kirkintilloch.
  • The Factories Act

    The Factories Act
    The Factories Act puts a limit on the number of hours young workers are allowed to work per week. The Factories Act also banned kids under the age of nine from working.
  • Queen Victoria Crowned

    Queen Victoria Crowned
    In Westminister, Queen Victoria was crowned.

    The Education Act makes schooling something that all children, between the ages of 5 and 13, needed to attend.
  • Scottish Trades Union Congress

    There isn't much to tell. In 1897, the Scottish Trades Union Congress was formed.
  • World War I

    Between 1914-1918, Scotland was an important role in World War I. 690,000 men were sent to the front. 74,000 men died during those four years. 150,000 men are seriously injured.
  • World War II

    World War II
    Between the years of 1939 and 1945, many things happen. Scapa Flow is an important Royal Navy yard. The ship building yards, industrial works, and factories, in Glasgow, play an important role again, just like they did in World War I. Those places were able to sustain attacks from the Luftwaffe. Shetland fishing boats are used to transport Allied agents in and out of Nazi-occupied Norway.

    Scotland's first nuclear reactor opens at Dounreay in Caithness. After the first one is built, many more are built in different places.
  • Dolly the Sheep

    Dolly the Sheep
    Scientists create the world's first cloned mammal at the Roselin Institute in Midlothian, Scotland. Dolly lived there until her death six years later.
