    Win the war with wheat
    Farmers were asked to grow more food. High school students were asked to do their patriotic duty and help with harvest. Women formed canning clubs to preserve food. Sugar and cornstarch were conserved in Kansas homes. They participated in national programs such as meatless Tuesdays. Image Sorce

    The worst epidemic in world history may have started in Kansas. Fort Riley was a very active army base during World War 1. It housed almost 26,000 men and hoursed and mules. These animals produced large mounts of manure that was isposed by burning. One day in March a dust storm came out of the sky. The dust mixed with the burnt ash of the manure and created a yellow haze.

    Little rain, hot days, high winds and soil-eroding created storms of black dust.This coyuld make cattle go blind, turn the daytime sky black or bury cars and farm equipment. Sometimes dust storm would last for several days. High win woul blow aroun dry topsoil.

    Kansan Run for President
    Landon entered politics by supporting Theodore Roosevelt and the Progressive Party. The same year Franklin Roosevelt was elected president and Alf Landon was elected governor of Kansas. Two years after Roosevelt became president the Democrats dominated the elections. Alf Landon was the only Republican imumbent governor left.
