The 5 Year Voyage To Fame Aboard The HMS Beagle

Charles Darwin set sail aboard the HMS Beagle on December 28th, 1831. Along the five year trip, Darwin had experienced and seen so many unusual things. Darwin sent many specimens back to his friend Henslow who had created a 31 page pamphlet of Darwin's findings and distributed it to Cambridge's scientific community. Darwin left on the voyage as an unknown scientist yet returned as a respected and well known scientist discovering of 12 new finch species & South America rising from the ocean.

Darwin's Theory of Evolution by Natual Selection

During the five year voyage, Darwin became obsessed with how different species had developed. Darwin recorded his thoughts in a notebook detailing his theories about how plants and animals change with their surroundings. He pondered thoughts about people breed animals to improve their animals with the best possible qualities. He discovered that within the natural environment the exact same process took place. The best lifeforms adapted, breed, and survived. This became known as Natural Selection.

    Darwin's Work in Jeopordy

Darwin had received a letter from Alfred Russel Wallace on 18 Jun, 1858 about a paper on the theory of evolution by natural selection. Darwin and his friend knew that Darwin had been the first to develop this theory. Darwin's son had become ill and was a more pressing issue than his discoveries. Darwin's son had died on June 28th, three days before his and Wallace's joint discoveries were presented to the Linnean Society. Their joint discovery fell on deaf ears and produced little interest.

    The Origin Of Species

One of Darwin's most important books is On the Origin of Species. This book caused many significant scientific breakthroughs and better understanding of the world around us. These breakthroughs suggested that the world was much older than anyone had known before. His book challenged the idea of creation from the Bible. His studies about evolution furthered research in ecology, biology, genetics and psychology. Most of his known ideas we understand today did not appear until his sixth revision.

    The Descent of Man

Darwin published yet another book that showed evidence that man had descended from the ape family. There were many people who were opposed to his idea that man had descended from apes. in 1872, the idea of evolution had been accepted by most scientist. Natural selection on the other hand, was much less accepted. In 1877, a man named Rudolf Virchow had said that Darwin's theory of evolution was an attack on society's moral foundations and that evolution should not be taught in German schools.
