  • Roanoke

    Roanoke

    Known as the lost colony. In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh sent people out to Roanoke. When they got there, the entire colony was gone. The only remnant was the word "CROATOAN" craved into a beam.

  • Jamestown

    Jamestown

    A joint stock company made a colony in Virginia called "Jamestown" in 1607. The Virginia Company established Jamestown. This colony had a really rough start due to the fact it was located on a swamp, the men didn't want to work, and to make things worse the natives were not friendly. They grew tobacco to make some money and help provide for the colony. But in 1622, the natives killed 1/4 of the people in Jamestown.

  • House of Burgesses

    House of Burgesses

    In 1619, the first legislature made up of elected representatives. The first thing the House of Burgesses did was put a minimum price on tobacco. To be able to vote for Burgesses, you had to be a white male who owned property at that time. This was first established in Jamestown.

  • Mayflower/Plymouth/Mayflower Compact

    Mayflower/Plymouth/Mayflower Compact

    The Mayflower brought the Pilgrims to Cape Cod. The Pilgrims settled the Plymouth Colony. They established the Mayflower Compact , it was the first self government in the colonies. Majority of the decisions were made by the men. There were only 160 people living there by Thanksgiving.

    New York

    New York was settled by the Dutch in1624. Originally called New Netherlands until the British got the land, they named it to honor the Duke of York. Therefore it being called New York. But a little while later the Dutch get it again for a little bit until reclaimed by the British again.

  • The Great Puritan Migration

    The Great Puritan Migration

    English Puritans left England due to religious persecution. The reason why they left was because they thought the catholic church needed to be reformed and they did not receive change. People who were puritans were usually middle-class citizens. The Puritan migration ended in 1642. The civil war is a reason to why it ended.

  • Massachuesetts Bay Colony

    Massachuesetts Bay Colony

    The Puritans settled this colony. They were given a charter from King Charles l. Puritans wanted to purify the church therefore the move from Britain. This colony gets so big that they basically swallow up the Plymouth colony. Later this becomes a royal colony.

    Maryland

    Lord Baltimore settles Maryland in 1635. He was a catholic who received 100 acres from King Charles l. Cecil Calvert took control over the land after his father passed. Protestants then became to swarm the land and Maryland became mostly protestant. The Toleration Act of 1649 gave religious freedom to all Christians in Maryland.

    Was founded by Rodger Williams in 1635 because he was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was kicked out for being a Christian. Rhode Island had no religious persecution.

    Thomas Hooker settled this colony in 1636. The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, it was the first written constitution of north America where citizenship was based on land ownership, not religion.

    The Maryland Toleration Act was a law that protected Christians. Mainly from fights and persecution. It was a pivotal step to freedom of religion in the colonies.

  • Caorlina

    Caorlina

    Carolina was settled by 8 supporters of King Charles ll in 1663. They were big into growing rice, indigo, and tobacco. Had to have a huge labor force to accomplish this so, had African slaves do the work. Eventually, Carolina became a royal colony and split into North and South Carolina.

    Bacon's Rebellion

    Governor Berkley refused to retaliate against the native americans. This didn't sit well with Nathaniel Bacon, he got a group of indentured servants, slaves, and farmers to revolt against the governor. They ended up destroying Jamestown. the result from this rebellion was white farmers and landholders were given more rights and africans became hereditary slaves.

    Pennsylvania was settled by William Penn in 1682. The colony was a Holy Experiment w/out a landowning aristocracy. Soon after a group called the Quakers were formed in 1647. They had very simple style of dress and were highly against war.

    The witch trials took place in Salem, Massachusetts. Women were claimed to be possessed by the devil and or practicing witchcraft. If found guilty of this, you were killed. This all died down though in Sept. 1692.
  • Great Awakening

    Religious revival that impacted the English colonies. Christians traveled and spread the gospel. The colonies were eventually split up religiously among the 13. Calvinism was one religion brought up from the Great Awakening. This Awakening ended in the 1740s.

  • French-Indian War

    French-Indian War

    This war was between the American colonists and French over the Ohio Valley, the Allegheny river, and the Monogahela river. A decent amount of Indian Tribes got involved. This war lasted for 7 years, also given the name " 7 Years War". Due to this war, it helps spark the Revolutionary War.
  • Albany Plan

    Albany Plan

    The Albany Plan was a plan to have the colonies under a whole government as one. The British made it seem as if they didn't follow this plan, they would surely die. But this plan never goes into effect because colonists believe it will take away power that they already have. Also the fear of losing territory was also a big concern. This plan help pave the way for future plans that were way more successful.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763

    The Proclamation of 1763 was issued due to the Native Americans revolting. It also helped establish boundaries for the colonies governments. The line of demarcation was also put into effect so British settlers already in that territory would cross back to their own territory. But, this was ignored by the people and still resulted in conflict with settlers and Indians.

  • Salutary Neglect

    Salutary Neglect

    An unofficial policy used by the British on the colonies. The colonies were not controlled by the British. This policy had no effect on the people because they still continued to disobey the law and smuggled goods with the Dutch. They never had any success in enforcing this law and gave up.
