Road to Revolution

  • End of the French and Indian War

The war has finally come into an end and the English won. The English are awaiting to move into the new land, which is now theirs (Treaty of Paris). It's not going to be as easy as they think...
  • Proclamation of 1763

This proclamation was declared by the British at the end of the French and Indian War in North America, mainly intended to pacify the Indians by checking the invasion of settlers on their lands.
  • Outcome

The Native Americans were unsatisfied with the new British rule.
An Ottawan leader called Pontiac led a rebellion.

It started in May 1763 and it lasted for three years.
Frontier forts were attacked. The Native Americans had a strategy - tricking settlers they gained acess and killed them.
  • British Reason and Colonist's Reaction

    British Reason:
Stop conflict between the colonists and the Native Americans.
    Save money. Colonists Reaction:
They got fustrated because they thought this was an attempt to limit freedom.
They ignored the Proclamation Line and moved into Ohio Vally eitherways.
  • Sugar Act

The Sugar Act put a three-cent tax of foreign refined sufar and increased taxes on coffee, indigo and certain kinds of wine. These taxes affected only a certain part of the population, but the affected merchants were very vocal. The colonists refused to pay it. Why?
    Money issues.
The British had a big debt and they had to find a way to get back on track. (pay it back)
  • British Reason and Colonist's Reaction

    British Reason:
Raise revenue “for defraying the expenses of defending, protecting, and securing” - Grenville
This means to pay the debt. Colonists Reaction:
Unhappy that British could control Taxation in Colonies without asking for any of their opinions.
Boycotts organized (The refusal to purchase the products of an individual, corporation, or nation as a way to bring social and political pressure for change).
  • Stamp Act

The new tax was imposed on all American colonists and required them to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used. Ship's papers, legal documents, licenses, newspapers, other publications, and even playing cards were taxed.
  • British Reason and Colonist's Reaction

    British Reason:
    To raise income. Colonist's Reaction:
They burned tax collectors in figure and tarred and feathered them.
  • Quartering Act

Colonists must suppy british soldiers with any needed accommodations or housing.
  • British Reasons and Colonist's Reaction

    British Reason:
Most soldiers were divided in public buildings, but when they were away from cities they had to be in private homes. Colonist's Reaction:
    They were furious.
They thought that it was, again, a way to limit freedom.
    Take the soldiers away.
    They refused to comply.
  • End of Rebbelion War

Pontiac signed treaty and war ended.
