First woman in parliment
A woman was elected to become a member of parliament. This shined a light on women to be able to be a part of parliament decisions. A lot more of equal rights and women's rights were brought into play as obviously a woman was a part of decision making in the parliament. -
Marriage bar lifted for women teachers
The marriage bar prevented women that were married to teach, if they were previously a teacher or wanted to become a teacher. A lot more married women were able to become teachers or work as a teacher. -
Women have access to contraceptive pills
Women got access to contraceptive pills which stop them being able to get pregnant. This changed life for women as it stopped them conceiving a baby. A lot less children were being born as a lot of women started taking the pill. -
Indigenous women earn the right to vote
After the original suffragettes campaign, Australia recognised not just women but indigenous women as well and gave them the right to vote. This helped shape Australia to what it is today and to influence a lot more indigenous rights. -
Aboriginal men & women recognised as citizens under the referendum.
After nearly 100 years of aboriginals seen as “inferior” or “slaves” people recognised them as citizens of society and Australia. This was a massive change of life for Aboriginals as they were seen as regular people and could vote, get jobs and become people of power -
Stonewall Riot
New York police raided the Stonewall Inn. The Inn got raided as people were mad about the LGBT community living a “normal” life. It got out of hand and it exploded into a full blown riot lasting several days. It was very galvanising for the LGBT movement and activism. It also lead to a lot of gay rights and protests. -
First abortion rights granted
The first rights to have an abortion were granted so women could have an abortion. Women had the choice to either keep their baby or have the right to have a abortion. -
Equal Gender Pay
Equal pay was introduced in 1972, so women could get paid the same amount of money for the same job as a man. Women that had the same job and did the same/more work than a man could be paid the same. -
Paid maternity leave for commonwealth employees
It provided commonwealth servants to have 12 weeks of paid maternity leave and 40 weeks unpaid.
Women that usually would not get paid on maternity leave which was very difficult to survive as you couldn’t make money. Women could make some money while on maternity leave. -
First gay Mardi Gras
It was to promote gay and lesbian culture to encourage political activism, to stop discrimination against the LGBT community. It really showed people about the LGBT community and that they were just regular ordinary people.
