  • Act of Union

    Lord Durhan recommends to unite Upper and Lower Canada. Britain really wanted to agree. Lord Sydenham declares the Act of union in 1840. However, Burham recommended a responsible goverment, which neither Britain and the Family Compact liked. Democracy was too new of an idea.

    Cholera outburst

    Cholera (a terrible infectious disease) spred across Canada killing tens of thousands of people. Men and women did whatever they could to stop the disease but it was more or less unstoppable with it's fierce symtoms such as vomitting and nausea.
  • Canada East/West formed

    Upper Canada becomes Canada West, and Lower Canada becomes Canada East: they are united into Province of Canada

    Irish Immigrants arrive in Canada

    In effect of the Geat Irish Famine, many Irish families fled to British north america with a promise for land and prosperity. Hundreds and thousands of sick and hungry desperate Irish men, women and their children arrived throughout the 1840s looking for land.
  • Robert Baldwin

    Robert Baldwin
    Robert Baldwin joined the Lower Canada reform leader, Louis Hippolyte LaFontaine to form a unioned government, representing the majority opinion in the elected Assembly.
    (called "having the confidence" ). It was the key principle of responsible government.
  • Nova Scotia Grants Responsable Government

    Canada East and Canada West were granted a responsible government one year later
  • Burning of the legislature

    Montrial's anglophone conservatives burnt the new parliment building to the ground. a decade earlier there was a rebellion and the rebellion damaged a lot of property, the government payed for the damage and was (in some peoples opinions) acknowledging the legitimacy of the rebellion.
  • Ottawa becomes capital of Canada

    Ottawa was chosen as the capital city for the Province of Canada because mobs were burning down parliament buildings and there was an American Invasion
  • British North American colonies

    British North America was made up of scattered colonies (Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Vancouver Island and British Columbia. Vancouver Island and BC merged in 1866.) These colonies were separate from each other but were all tied to Britain.
  • Grand Trunk Railway

    Grand Trunk Railway
    A railway that stretched as far as Sarnia to Portland, Maine USA. The GTR company dug themselves into to a 15 million dollars debt which the government had to loan to help cover for.
  • Fenians

    The Fenians attacked New Brunswick and proposed the annexation bill to USA. It stated that the USA would attack the west, but was never passed.
  • Canadian Confederation

Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia had no reason to join because it didn't effect them nearly as much as other colonies. They eventually did join because of reasons such as the risk of fenian attack etc.
