  • Thirty Year’s War

    Thirty Year’s War
    The Thirty Year's War was a series of wars. The start of the wars was in Bohemia. The king, Ferdinand, suppressed Protestants to assert power. A few Protestants threw 2 Royals out of a window causing a revolt. This event is known as the Defenestration of Prague. Ferdinand the year after was elected as Holy Roman Emperor. He used his new power to forcefully bring back the Reformation. These wars caused destruction to many states. The wars ended in 1648 with a series of treaties and divided land.
  • English Bill of Rights

    English Bill of Rights
    In 1688 William and Mary were invited to be crowned. Before getting crowned, in 1689 they needed to accept acts passed by the Parliament. These acts are known as the English Bill of Rights. This was important in history because these acts gave more power to the Parliament. This is because one of the acts passed was that the monarch was required to regularly summon the Parliament. It also limited the king or queen's ability to interfere. These ideas would also later affect the United States.

    Emperor Charles IV of Hapsburg, Austria, had no male heir, but instead a daughter. He asked his daughter, Maria Theresa, to succeed him. This wish was ignored in 1740 when he died. Frederick II of Prussia took advantage of part of Hapsburg. This started the War of the Austrian Succession. Maria had gone to Hungary for help. She found the most help in Britain and Russia. Maria was able to gain support and secure her role as Emperor. She made decisions to strengthen and do good for her subjects.

    The Stamp Act was an act passed by the Parliament affecting the US. The US disliked that they had no representation in the parliament. They protested the acts saying "No taxation without representation." The Parliament did not listen to their protests and instead further asserted the acts. This angered the colonists. The colonists fought back with events such as the Boston Tea Party and riots. The Stamp Act is important in history because it led to the freedom of the United States we have today.

    After the colonists starting many riots as protest, a war started between them and the British. The American Revolution began at the battles of Lexington and Concord. The Second Continental Congress after this battle created a Continental army. George Washington was in charge of this army. In this war, the colonists were at a disadvantage because of their limited resources. The colonists were able to create an alliance with France. In 1781 with the help of the alliance, the Americans won.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    The Treaty of Paris was signed by France, the British, and the Americans. It was to formally declare that America was now independent. It also officially ended the war. The Treaty of Paris is important because without it America wouldn't have been recognized as independent. Assuming that the Treaty of Paris was never signed could mean that the United States could still be a part of Britain today.

    The Tennis Court Oath was an oath taken by delegates. The oat was “never to separate and to meet wherever the circumstances might require until we have established a sound and just constitution.” The delegates were a group of men who mostly consisted of the middle class. Their purpose was to solve the crisis that was going on in France. They declared themselves as the National Assembly at the time that they had taken this oath.
  • Storming of the Bastile

    Storming of the Bastile
    On July 14, 1789, the French Revolution began with the Storming of the Bastile. The commander of the gates didn't want to open the gates. They instead opened fire at the crowd. The mob was soon able to break through despite the attacks. The scene was described as violent and chaotic by Thomas Jefferson. The mob had killed many political officials and released prisoners. This is an important part of history because this was the event that had started the French Revolution.

    French Revolution
    The French Revolution began at the storming of the Bastile but went on for many years. There was a declaration that was proclaimed to try and avoid more deaths after the reign of terror. This only angered people more leading to more violence to rise. During this rising anger, the royal family attempted an escape but failed. This revolution's chaos was talked about by other countries. After the revolution ended years later it made the changes that are celebrated today.

    Reign of Terror
    In 1793 France was threatened by all sides of the surrounding countries. France was at war with the majority of Europe. The country itself was struggling internally. In Paris, there were food shortages along with inflation. Vendée was facing a rebellion against the government led by priests. The Reign of Terror was a time where the government was putting up hasty trials. Most trials leading to death. It was during September 1793 to July 1794 that 17,000 were executed and 300,000 put to death.
