  • Party membership of Nagy Imre was restored

    After the reburial of Rajk, the Rákosi regime had been reevaluated. Later on Nagy Imre was given back his oarty memberships, which created the base for Nagy to get into power after the revolution.

    The Union of the Hungarian University and College students was formed on this day. They were an anti-communist "association" that drafted the list of demands that gave the base for the revolution of 1956.

    Demonstrations started at Petőfi statute, others gathered at Bem square. All together 200,000 people marched to the Kossuth square chanting their demands whic included independence and the removal of Soviet troops. While one group demolished the Stalin statue, the other half went to the Radio to make the demands public, but it runed into an armed uprising. At night the lights were switched off...

    Fights against the Soviets

    The Soviet didn't let it go easily, so troops occupied Budapest, meanwhile continuous fights were present in many cities of the country. On the 25th there was a huge chain fire in fron of the Parliament, where civilians including women, children and elderly participated in the demonstrations.

    Ceasefire with the Soviets
    Nagy Imre initiated a ceasefire with the Soviets and as a result Soviet troops started to withdraw. Nagy Imre believed that it was a national and democratic movement, that would aim to restore the sovereignity of Hungary and create democratic environment within the country.

    The one-party system was abolished in Hungary, therefore former political parties were reestablished. Nagy Imre wasn't affraid of this, since he believed that he is popular enough to convince people that socialism is good, and would win national elections. Besides that political prisoners and Mindszenty József was released from prison, even though the Catholic church meant danger for communism and socialism.

    Denouncement of the Warsaw Pact
    Nagy Imre announced Hungary's withdrawal from the Warsaw Pact, and as a result Hungary became a neutral country. Later asked the UN to help amintain the sovereignity and neutrality of Hungary against the Soviet troops.

    Nagy created a coalitional government, meanwhile the Russians started to negotiate with Maléter and Kádár. While Maléter was arrested, Kádár had to make a decision about his and Hungary's future.
  • Soviet attack on Budapest

    Soviet attack on Budapest
    The Soviets came back and attacked Budapest. Nagy Imre stated that even though the Soviet offensive had started the government is still in its place and that the army is fighting back the opposing forces. Meanwhile Nagy Imre fled to Yugoslavia in reality, Kádár established the Revolutionary Workers and Peasants Government and took on the power.

    Continuous street fights

    Hungarian "forces", the Pesti srácok tried to fight against the Soviet forces with more, less success. The UN didn't intervene as they wouldn't recognize the Kádár government and were worried that the intervention would lead to another and bigger figth.

    After that Nagy Imre was arrested, the process of retaliation begun. Many were executed, whil thousands were imprisoned or emigrated from the country. Those who emigrated all tried to seek safety in western countries, especially in the USA.
