The Mexican Revolution, which began in 1910, was one of the great revolutionary upheavals of the twentieth century. The Mexican Revolution began as a movement of middle-class protest against the long-standing dictatorship of Porfirio Diaz 1876-1911. Like many of Mexico's nineteenth-century rulers, Diaz was an army officer who had come to power by a coup.
