  • The Baptist and Quakers

Played a role in the 17th century with not being accepting of different religions coming into the United States. If anyone on the boat traveling would disobey the religion or any of the rules they would get punished. • United States has no national church

18th century the United States started to become a little more tolerant of the other religions as they came into the United States. The United States was a disestablishment when it was first founded. It was set up with no national church; it opened up the “market place” for religions to try to convert people.
  • Religious Differences

More and more religious differences came about due to the amount of slaves that were being brought into the United States from Africa. 10 million were forced to come to America and about 1-2 million were killed in the crossing alone. Religion for Africa as a whole did not survive because the young men they brought were not good at carrying out old traditions.
  • Martin Luther King Jr.

20th century the United States was the most tolerant to different religions and having all of them exist in the same country. The civil rights movement was a big part of getting the 20th century to believe they can all exist in the same country together. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted people to see that we are all intertwined and what hurts one person with hurt others as well.
