  • Marconi Invents Radio

    Marconi, an Italian Inventor, sent and received the first radio signal in 1895. Although he may not have been the one who actually invented rado, he is the one who recieves credit for it.

  • The Research of AM Waves Begins

    The development of AM (Amplitude Modulation) Waves began in 1900 with Reginald Fessenden's radiotelephone experiments.

  • Lee De Forest invents the Audion Tube

    The Audion Tube, a vacuum, that amplifies signals, was invented by Lee De Forest, although some believe that a Canadian inventor named Reginald Fessenden actually came up with the idea.

  • First Song Played On Radio

    On the evening of December 24, 1906, Reginald Fessenden used the alternator-transmitter to send out a short program from Brant Rock. O Holy Night was played on the violin.

  • The Titanic Sinks

    When the Titanic sank, a lot of lives were saved due to Marconi's idea whch enabled people out at sea to communicate to people on land quickly.

  • Frank Conrad Creates the First Radio Station

    The first radio station, created by Frank Conrad, was named 8XK and was later renamed KDKA. It is still around today and broadcasts out of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.

  • WEAF Aired First Commercial

    In 1922 WEAF aired a 10 minute toll broadcast for an apartment complex charging $50.

  • FRC Is Established

    FRC was established because Uncle Charlie became too popular. The purpose of the FRC was to organize the licensing of transmitters and assign radio station frequencies, call letters, and power limits.

    This was the middle of the Great Depression, and Radio provided an escape for people.

  • Call Letters Were Created

    A station can't be identified by its frequency because the same frequency could be used in different areas, so call letters were established.

  • Major Edwin Armstrong Invents FM transmitter

    On December 26, 1933, Major Edwin Armstrong recieved a patent for the FM trasmitter, which made for a stronger signal and a higher quality sound.

  • TV appears

    The first official TV station was created in 1935. As a result, a lot of advertisers switched from radio to television, causing radio to lose money.

  • Elvis Presley Airs on Radio For First Time

    A disk jockey from Memphis, Tennessee put Presley on the radio with the song “That’s All Right (Mama)"

  • AM Top 40 Begins

    AM Top 40 began with lock on the ratings. Even though its sound was stale, in some markets more than 50% of the people using radio still listened,
