    agricultural work was dictated by the seasons- there was little or no free time for workers to take part in leisure activities. most people spent most of their time on the land.
  • industrial revelution

    during the industrial revolution, people still worked long hours, there fore they did not have much leisure time. even though people changed the nature of their work. they still did not have any free time to participate in leisure activities.
  • saturday half day

    due to the fact that most workers had poor living and workers had poor living and working conditions, sport was slow to develop. factory owners realized that a happy workforce would be more effective, so they encouraged the development of sports clubs. many of the lager firm clubs paid for annual excursions to the seaside- this was the beginning of the seaside holiday. people now have much more free time available to them. they also should have 4 weeks holiday each year.
  • public schools

    public schools
    in the 19th centurary, upper classes sent children to public schools. theses schools were inclusive to upper classes. sport was popular and was well organized with good facilities available. from 1850 onwards, sport really began to develop quickly, mainly because pupils had large amount of free time.
  • develop of planes

    during the war planes were made to be a public transport, which would of been more reliable and much cheaper to use.
  • public transport

    improved transport systems started to contribute to sport from the 1950's with the railway system. this allowed large numbers of people to travel all around the country and helped to popularise sports such as football, rugby cricket.
  • car ownership

    roads improved after the 1950' and this helped to improve coach and bus travel. mass car productions began in the 20th century- now most households own a car. people can easily travel with there favourite team pr participate in sporting activities.
