PSY A190 Extracurriculars Timeline

  • Period: to

    UAA Psychology Club Member

UAA Psych Club and UAA Psi Chi meet jointly. Psi Schi membership isn't available until the student has completed 9 psychology credits. I will only have 7 psychology credits completed by Aug. 2019. This will be a good warmup before I qualify for Psi Chi, and it will help me build community with my fellow students. Maybe I'll even meet another student with similar career interests, and we can do volunteer projects or attend conferences together!
  • American Psychological Association Undergraduate Student Affiliate

I want to be in the loop with the largest, most reputable professional association for psychology in the US. My grad school would ideally offer an APA accredited doctoral program, just in case I want to continue my studies.
  • Alaska Psychological Association Student Affiliate

I would like to get involved in the local psychology scene, and joining a local chapter of a professional organization would be the best way to do that. My primary goal would be to meet local people, perhaps find a mentor, and be in the know when local volunteer opportunities arise.
  • Period: to

    Psi Chi Honor Society Member

Will meet qualifications by the start of Spring 2020 semester. Becoming a member will help me network with other psychology majors, focus on my psychology interests outside of the classroom, and also make connections with psychology faculty/professionals around Anchorage. An eventual leadership position will help show soft skills that grad schools look favorably upon.
  • Western Psychological Association Membership

Undergrad students who register for a WPA conference automatically receive lifetime affiliate membership status with the WPA.
  • Period: to

Western Psychological Association 100th Annual Convention

WPA has been noted to be welcoming to undergraduate students. Students may present research and receive attendance scholarships for the convention. Moreover, student registrants receive lifetime affiliate membership status with the WPA upon registering for their first convention. This would be y first psychology convention, so I would attend, just as a student affiliate. It would help me learn about today's psychology field and allow me to meet relevant professionals.
  • Minnesota Undergraduate Psychology Conference Attendee

I would like to visit a variety of conferences to gain as much knowledge as possible. This would be my first undergrad-only psychology conference, and it would be valuable for me to attend as I prepare to get into my upper-division classes and think about paper/poster presentations that I may do in the future.
  • Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology Student Affiliate

I/O Psychology would be my chosen field of study for grad school. Grad schools look for students involved in extracurriculars that focus on specific, relevant fields of professional interest. Involvement with SIOP would help me find research opportunities, network with professionals in the field, and also help me find volunteer opportunities too.
  • Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference Student Volunteer

SIOP allows students to volunteer during their conference weekend in exchange for free attendance and a food stipend. Volunteering within the psychology community shows an attitude of service in the eyes of grad school committees, and it also would help me get involved with the I/O community (my favored area of study) by attending the conference.
  • UAA Student Showcase Academic Conference Presentation

It's my goal to produce quality work during my time at UAA. Getting a nomination for Student Showcase from faculty will give me a platform to present to the public, get published in a journal, and also have something prepared to present at undergraduate research conferences, as well. Proposed title: “Parkinson's Law: Measuring work productivity against time allotment among subjects."
  • Departmental Honors in Psychology

Recognizes exceptional students who maintain honorable GPA and complete additional course requirements. In addition to graduating with university honors, I want to make sure that my performance within the department is top-notch. This dedication to my studies in psychology will help grad schools notice me as a serious student who will continue my dedication through my education and research at their institution.
