    On June 6, 1889 the Great Seattle Fire destroyed more than 60 of its downtown blocks. In the following years engineers designed Seattle so there were less hills and more easy access to ports.

    In 1897 the Alaskan Gold Rush began. As the closest state to Alaska, Washington became a major stepping off point for the miners and because of it ,Seattle as a city, was put on the map. At the same time of the Alaskan Gold Rush the Couer d' Alene Silver Rush was going on too. Spokane, being the closest city big enough to supply the tools miners needed, also got put on the map and profitted immensely.

    World's First Powered Heavier-than-air Airplane Flight
    Orville and Wilbur Wright, brothers, are credited with building the first plane. Orville is the brother who flew in the Wright Flyer's first succecful flight,piloting the world's first airplane flight. In the following years the brothers strenghtened their design and built many more planes.

    Alaskan-Yukon-Pacific Exposition
    The Alaskan-Yukon-Pacific Exposition was held in 1909 in Seattle and drew four million visitors to the city. The fair was designed to publisize the development, beauty, virtures, and opportunities of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. It was originally planned to be held in 1907, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Yukon Gold Rush, but due to the Jamestown Exposition, the planners of the event moved it to 1909.

    World War 1
    World War I effected Washington state because many of the state's resources were needed for the war. Wood, was cut to build planes and other needed commodities for war. Canned goods were also needed so, along with the food, more canneries opened and this helped boost Seattle's economy. On April 6, 1917 the U.S. had officially declared itself as part of the Allied Forces. In 1919 the Allied Forces won World War I.

    The Panama Canal is a 77 kilimeter long waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The completion of the canal makes it easier to ship goods to the West coast, and thus more goods were shipped to and from Seattle which boosted the cities economy.

    Lake Washington Ship Canal
    The Canal runs east to west, and connects Union Bay, Lake Union, the Montlake Cut, Portage Bay, the Fremont Cut, Salmon Bay, and Shilshole Bay, with the Sound, which empties into the Pacific Ocean. This made it easy to transport cargo to different rivers, lakes, and seas.

    The 19th Amendment allowed a citizen of any sex to vote. After fighting for many years, women had finally had got their wish, they were allowed to vote. This was mainly due to the NAWSA, a group of women who fought for women being allowed to vote and many other women's rights that they did not have at the time.

    The Great Depression was a time of severe economic depression throughout the world. The depression was the worst of the 20th century and continued to the late 1930s. The depression began in the United States because of a huge crash in the stock market. Jobs became scarce and very hard to find and many families went homeless.
