Under the name R.A. RODGERS, Castle has his first book published.
-
Richard Rodgers (aka Rick Castle) meets Kyra Blaine while the two were studying at the campus library. A month later, he asks her out, and the two date for the remainder of their time at college.
-
Rick Rodgers dates Kyra Blaine. Ends after college, when Kyra goes to London, and he doesn't follow. Kyra was "the one that got away", his first love.

R.A. RODGERS has his second book published. Dedicated to Kyra: "You make the stars shine."
-
After Kyra breaks up with him and leaves for London, a heartbroken Castle (age 22) is recruited by the CIA.
-
Castle's first field assignment for the CIA ends with him having to kill someone. After which, he spends 6 months in Los Angeles, recovering from the experience. He meets Meredith, with whom he has an intense and passionate, yet brief "relationship".
-
Castle "dates" Meredith; their relationshp is hot and heavy, more sex and partying than anything else.
-
Castle finds out that Meredith has been having sex with directors to land roles in low budget movies. He leaves Los Angeles when the CIA recalls him, terminating his "relationship" with Meredith without a second thought.
-
Meredith gives birth to a baby girl. The infant becomes a ward of the state.

-
Castle and Sophia have a roughly six year "friends with benefits" kind of relationship; it never really goes beyond just sex. They mutually end it when it starts to interfere with their work. Sophia later claims that the initial spark between them faded over time, and that the "relationship" was better before they'd slept together.
-
During her rookie years, Beckett falls for her training officer, Mike Royce. The two have a brief physical relationship, before Royce ends it and files for early retirement.

-
A CIA operation, which Castle was apart of, to entrap notorious mercenary Clyde Pendergast failed.
-
Castle and Turner's assignment is almost botched because their "relationship" got in the way. After the mission was finished, they mutually decided to end their "friends-with-benefits" arrangement.
-
Beckett meets FBI Agent Will Sorenson during a child abduction case. They soon become romantically involved.
-
Kate Beckett dates Will Sorenson, until he gets a job promotion that takes him to Boston. He accepts the job, just assuming she'd go with him. He made the decision without consulting her, which upsets Beckett. As a result, she breaks up with him.
-
Alexis's adoptive parents die in an automobile accident not long after she turned 15.
-
The CIA erases all information of Alexis from the foster care system and takes her to a D.C. black site, where they nurture her innate talents and high intellect to develop "Spyglass".
-
Beckett gets back with Sorenson after he returns to New York to help solve the disappearance of a little girl. After the case, they fall into bed, and Beckett reluctantly agrees to give him another shot. They only last 3 months, as Sorenson gets another promotion, this one taking him to Chicago.
-
Dick Coonan, who killed is brother Jack, is identified as the hitman known as Rathborne, who carried out the hit on Johanna Beckett. Kate is forced to shoot him in the chest when he takes Detective Kevin Ryan hostage in an attempt to escape. Coonan dies of his injuries. This is the first time Beckett has ever killed someone while in the line of duty.
-
Beckett meets Robbery Detective Tom Demming, and the two work a case together. They soon become romantically involved.
-
Kate dates Robbery Detective Tom Demming for a month, though ultimately ends it when she decides he's too perfect. Later, she'll tell Castle that "Tom was vanilla, when I wanted Rocky Road."
-
Kate dates Dr. Josh Davidson, thinking it could work because they both are dedicated to their jobs and workaholics. Though she really liked him, she later admits to herself that she was never fully committed to the relationship, and never loved him. They break up shortly after she was shot.
-
Castle and Raymond "Ray" Kilmer are partnered up by the Agency to chase after a terrorist leader in Turkey.

Earlier in the week, Hal Lockwood escapes from jail. During a confrontation in a hangar, it is revealed that Captain Montgomery was part of the conspiracy surrounding Johanna Beckett's murder. He sacrifies himself to save Beckett, killing Lockwood and all of his men. Later, Detective Kate Beckett was shot in the chest while giving the eulogy at Captain Roy Montgomery's funeral.
-
He also discovers a series of encrypted emails, written in Cyrillic, coming through the D.C. black site’s communications. He believes that there is a rogue agent within the CIA attempting to steal “Spyglass”.
-
On her 18th birthday, Castle gets Alexis out of the CIA black site in D.C., and stages a break in, copying "Spyglass" onto a USB flash drive.
