Afonso de Albuquerque takes Goa for portugal in a conquest.

Spain invades Portugal

Portugal is invaded the Spanish army commanded by Fernando Álvarez de Toledo (Duke of Alba).

Dec 1, 1640

Portugal restores the monarchy

The Duke of Bragança takes the throne.

Dec 27, 1703

Methuen Treaty with England

The Methuen Treaty opens up trade with England and allows them to come into the country.

Apr 21, 1705

Brazil produces gold for the portugese.

Portugal (with brazil) become the number one producer of gold in the world. They achieve this with brazil producing 600,000 ounces of gold a year.

Nov 1, 1755

Lisbon is hit by massive earthquake

Portugal is hit by a massive earthquake which brings a tsunami and a devistating fire. 40,000 people are killed and the king and his royal dukes rush to restore the country.

Apr 7, 1807

The French invade Portugal

French emperor; Napoleon Bonaparte invades Portugal and send the royal family to Brazil and Brazil becomes a part of Portugal.

The French are driven out of Portugal

Napoleon Bonaparte is driven out of power and leaves Portugal.

The Libral revoulation

The libral revoulation against a british regency is started in Porto

Miquel becomes king of Portugal

Dom Miguel overthrows the throne and gets rid of the constituion and parliment. Then he declares himself the "absoulate king'.

Pedro is crowned king

King Pedro of Brazil defeats the Portugese Miguel the first and exiles him from the country.

Civil war in Portugal

Revolution of Maria da Fonte is started by peasents. They rose up against the costa cabral becasue of tax rasises. It was mostly led by woman.

Portugal joins the allied war effort three yaers after the first world war started.

Salazar's reign

Antonio Salazar was president of portugal for over 30 years. He established the Estado Novo which lasted for another couple decades after him. He was very succesful and leaders in the U.S and other countries prasied him.

Cencorship is systemized and put into ful effect in Portugal.

Nato formed

Portugal is a founding member of NATO.

Carnation revolution restores democracy

The Carnation Revolution restores democracy after 50 years of dictatorship. A military coup backed by the public overthrew the the regime of the Estado Novo.
