    The rapid growth of American cities in the 19th century, both immigration and migration from rural areas caused huge problems in city governments, which were structed poorly and unstable.
    Political machines were organized group of politicians who wanted candidates of their group elected to all of the top jobs in the city government and use that power to make th leaders of the organization rich. The tp man of political machine was called "Boss."

    William M. Tweed was the most famous city Boss and he ran a political machine from around 1860 until 1872.
    He demanded bribes and also stole millions of dollars right from city's bank account.

    He was convicted after he was arrested and he died in jail in 1878.
    Even Tweed dead, bribery and corruption are still common in New York.
