  • Erie Canal

    Erie Canal
    The Erie Canal is a passage way built from the Hudson River and Lake Erie. The idea came from Mayor De Witt Clinton to do this idea. The President rejected this but Clinton did not give up his idea. He rised the money for it. The construction was a waterway which streched 363 miles 40 feet wide and 4 feet deep. Then, it had 83 locks to help move the boats. It ended up paying for itself within 10 years.

It inspired him to write the star sppangled banner which became the National Anthem. After this, the fort never came under attack again. But, it still was a military post on and off for the next 100 years. During the civil war, it was used as a prison camp. Fort McHenry is now a national monument and historical shrine.

    The treaty of Ghent called for the end of hostilities. It required that conquered territory and that the prisoners be returned. It appointed a commision to study lingering boundary issues between the U.S. and Canada. John Quincy adams said nothing was adjusted and nothing was settled. This treaty officially ended the war of 1812.

    President James Monroe decided to make a proclamation that said that the Europen nations can not get involve with Western Hemisphere. Then, it also said that Spain can not try to take out the colonies that Latin American states had ained their indepence.

    The Cherokee were a very peaceful tribe but they were told that they had to leave. They refused because they had to many people. They also did not like the idea becuase they thought that they were allies with the U.S. so they went to the Supreme Court for help. The Supreme Court told them just to say in their houses. The American thought that it was fine. But Andrew Jackson refused and told the Army to go and get them. It was the winter and they were not prepared, but they were still forced.

  • Underground Railroad

    This was a net work that slaves used to escape from the South out to the North or Canada. Harriet Tubman toook a big role in this and so dd the Quakers helping out one of his slaves to escape. The underground railroad was not only used by foot it was also used by a bot and train. Isaac T. Hopper was the first day to help slaves escape through the path of the Underground Railroad. In 1850 through 1860 was when over 100,600 dlaves escaped by using the Underground Railroad.

One day, John Marshall was walking around where it was being built and he saw aomething shining on the ground. He went over and discovered that it was probably gold. They went to get it checked and it was almost pure gold! The word got around, and soon, people from all over the world were coming to California in search of the gold. Everyone wanted to be a part of it. Its crazy how one little nugget of gold started it all
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote an antislavery novel in 1852. The novel eventually came on to be a nation wide best seller, the book was based on a African-American man. This novel also helped set ground work for the civil war. The author Harriet Beecher Stowe died in 1896. But in the book the African man escapes the Underground Railroad and is successfully for the rest of his life.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

It was passed by the Congress on May 30th, 1854. It was made so that the people of Kansas could decide whether their place could be pro-slavery or anti-slavery or not. This act led to the war in 1861. It caused many differences which caused the people to fight. The West was expanding rapidly, which was one of the big reasons why the Senator, Stephen Douglas, wrote this bill which became a law.

He wasn't very rich and didn't have anything to pay for weapons or supplies in order to get slaves freedom. So, he and his men or "army" raided the federal arsenal at Harper's ferry. He was going to use the weapons that they took to give to the slaves for protection. He was going to arm them so that they would have something. John Brown and five of his sons also raided many places in Missouri. He was hung in 1859.

    It was invented by a man named Eli Whitney. Many people copied his invention due to a loophole in the paten system. Eli lost money because of that.His invention was sold to farmes that use it on their own cotton. As a kid, he took stuff apart and put them back together.
